A Brief History of Abortion in Florida and What’s Next

April began with bad news — then good — from the Florida Supreme Court. By Jayne Butler, Healthcare Issue Group Under the Roe v Wade U.S. Supreme Court decision in 1973, women could receive abortions up to week 24, with no state interference. However, the Dobbs decision in June 2022 overturned Roe and gave control of abortion laws to the individual states. The Florida Legislature immediately passed a 15-week abortion ban, which has been in effect since. However, the anti-abortion movement was not satisfied. In April 2023, the Florida Legislature passed and Gov. DeSantis signed into law a 6-week ban. The law did allow for abortions up to 15 weeks for victims of incest, rape or human trafficking — only if they provided evidence such as a restraining order, police report or medical record. After 15 weeks, a pregnancy could be terminated only if the mother was at serious risk or if a

Some Tips To Boost Your Mood

Some Tips To Boost Your Mood

By Nancy Gau, Healthcare Co-chair The holidays are behind us and many of us find this a particularly difficult time. The weather can be gloomy, and post-holiday blues can get us down or make us feel less motivated. Here are a few tips the Healthcare Issue Group is sharing that might help: * Take the time to exercise, even if it’s just a 10-minute walk. * Slow down. The holiday rush is behind us. Move more slowly through your daily routine, and simply breathe.  Breathwork can reduce anxiety. * Do the things you love more often. * Don’t deprive yourself of a little comfort food, while continuing to eat those veggies. * Learn something new. * Let go of people or situations that drain you. * Find joy in little things and laugh more. * Get enough quality sleep and rest. * Make beautiful memories. * Donate $10 or $20 to a charity that helps others. Abortion Access Petition Drive Successful

Abortion Access Petition Drive Successful

By Ashley Cacicedo-Surdovel, Young Leaguers Chair Thank you to everyone who collected and signed petitions for Floridians Protecting Freedom’s Constitutional Amendment. As of this month, the Florida Division of Elections updated its official count and I am excited to announce that we have reached the petition threshold. Our volunteers across the state — from FPF, the League and many other groups and individuals — have worked diligently to collect valid signatures from registered Florida voters, and we couldn’t have reached this milestone for democracy without you. The Florida Supreme Court will conduct a Public Hearing on Wednesday, Feb. 7, at 9 a.m. to discuss the abortion access ballot initiative and language. Please click on the image (above right) to register for the Public Hearing watch party. Floridians Protecting Freedom, the group managing the petition, still needs funding to help meet the goal of getting abortion access Constitutional Amendment on the November 2024 ballot in Florida. Please donate as much as you

Getting Abortion Access on the 2024 Ballot

Getting Abortion Access on the 2024 Ballot

Sign the Petition by December 15th! Click here: Put Abortion on the Ballot! – Floridians Protecting Freedom The overwhelming majority of Floridians think we should all have the freedom to make our own personal healthcare decisions without interference from politicians.  Despite that, politicians have again denied Floridians the right to control their own bodies and lives, approving a six-week abortion ban. It bans abortion before many people even realize they are pregnant and leaves little time to get care under Florida’s two-trip requirement. Help put these decisions back in the hands of Florida families and their doctors, not politicians. Watch Young Leaguer Jihan Bazile explaining the Petition on YouTube.

How Can Seniors Save Money?

by Nancy Gau, Healthcare Chair Costs can add up quickly, so it’s beneficial to find ways to save money when possible. Seniors can save money through various cost-saving measures, such as budgeting and taking advantage of discounts that some businesses offer to those starting at the ages of 55, 60, 62 or 65. Here are some great ways for seniors to stretch their retirement savings and consider new options that can help save them money. 1. Shop for new healthcare coverage  Review your insurance policies and shop around for a better rate. Medicare healthcare coverage that doesn’t match your needs can end up costing you more in the long run. According to a report by HealthView Services a healthy 65-year-old couple who retired in 2021 will likely spend between $156,208 and $1 million on their lifetime healthcare costs, depending on their lifespan and their location.
