Some elections observers just can’t be convinced

Some elections observers just can’t be convinced

By Mark Schneider This League member’s Opinion was published in ‘The Palm Beach Post’ on April 7. This year, as the Palm Beach County Supervisor of Elections was publicly testing ballot-counting machines, one observer grew so animated in her questioning of the process that she had to be removed by sheriff’s deputies. The same thing was true, perhaps to a lesser degree, in Pinellas County several days later. In reaction, the canvassing boards of both counties joined Collier County in deciding that they would no longer accept questions from observers during the testing but only afterward. And that’s a shame. To give you some context: supervisors of elections are required to do “logic and accuracy” tests to assure that their ballot-counting equipment is working properly. This happens before every election, and you can observe it. Canvassing boards — composed of a judge, a county commissioner, and the SOE — oversee

We Support Medicaid Expansion Clean Water Measures

The League of Women Voters of Florida is officially supporting two citizen ballot initiative drives aimed at securing a spot on the 2026 ballot‚ and the Palm Beach County chapter has already begun bringing these petitions to events. The first initiative, the Right to Clean and Healthy Waters Amendment, seeks to empower Floridians to better hold their government accountable when it comes to Florida waters. This amendment is crucial for protecting our environment and public health. Click here to learn more about this amendment. The second initiative, the Amendment to Provide Medicaid Coverage to Eligible Low-Income Adults, aims to expand Medicaid coverage to low-income adults who currently fall into the coverage gap. This initiative could provide much-needed healthcare access to thousands of Floridians. Click here to learn more about this amendment. LWVFL believe that both of these initiatives are critical for the well-being of our state and its residents. Stay

Electoral Votes: A Primer

By Daniel Lishansky, NPV Committee Chair Do you know what determines how many electoral votes each state receives? A state’s electoral votes are equal to the number of members in the state’s congressional delegation, i.e., the total of their House members and Senators. And the 23rd Amendment to the Constitution, ratified in 1961, says that the District of Columbia gets three votes. There are a total of 538 electoral votes in the United States. Once the National Popular Vote is enacted, the states who opt-in (with a combined total of 270 electoral votes) will cast their electoral votes for the candidate who receives the most popular votes across the country. It means that every vote will count equally and no longer will just a handful of swing states choose our president. If you are interested in a presentation for your community or business group, please contact me, Danny Lishansky, at npv@lwvpbc.org.

A Brief History of Abortion in Florida and What’s Next

April began with bad news — then good — from the Florida Supreme Court. By Jayne Butler, Healthcare Issue Group Under the Roe v Wade U.S. Supreme Court decision in 1973, women could receive abortions up to week 24, with no state interference. However, the Dobbs decision in June 2022 overturned Roe and gave control of abortion laws to the individual states. The Florida Legislature immediately passed a 15-week abortion ban, which has been in effect since. However, the anti-abortion movement was not satisfied. In April 2023, the Florida Legislature passed and Gov. DeSantis signed into law a 6-week ban. The law did allow for abortions up to 15 weeks for victims of incest, rape or human trafficking — only if they provided evidence such as a restraining order, police report or medical record. After 15 weeks, a pregnancy could be terminated only if the mother was at serious risk or if a

Voter Services Needs Team Leaders

Voter Services Needs Team Leaders

VOTER SERVICES NEEDS TEAM LEADERS By Phyllis Applebaum‚ Voter Services Chair  We are in an important election year‚ and the League of Women Voters wants as many people to vote as possible.  However, we know many aren’t ready to vote. Many who traditionally vote by mail don’t realize their privileges now expire at the end of every even year. Many have yet to reapply. Also, the state has purged 1 million voters from the Florida voter rolls in 2023 — and some were removed in error. In other cases, people moved and have yet to update their voter registrations. We want to help people to check their voter information to be sure it is correct and up-to-date. That is why we send teams of people out to senior facilities, fairs and schools. That is also why we need Team Leaders since we can’t go out without them! What is a Team
