IN MEMORIAM: Ellen Galkin

IN MEMORIAM: Ellen Galkin

We were sad to learn of the passing of LWVPBC member Ellen Galkin in February. She was a long-time member, donor and supporter of the work of the League and believed in our mission. We share with her loved ones in the loss of such a kind, dedicated, compassionate person. She is missed. This obituary was published March 12 by The New York Times. Ellen Sanders Galkin, a lifelong, passionate advocate for nursing and the personal, professional and political rights of women, died peacefully in New York City, February 29, 2024, at age 81, after undergoing treatment for lung cancer. League is on The Cloud

League is on The Cloud

OUR LEAGUE’S LEGACY IS PROTECTED IN THE CLOUD  By Linda Kramer, LWVPBC Administrative Assistant Our LWVPBC board recognized the importance of storing years and years of history which, until now, have been kept in binders on bookshelves. They are now safely archived by historical importance and can be accessed securely from our website by any member with a Gmail account through Google Docs. (Learn how to create a free Google/Gmail account.) Why did we decide to store these important documents in the Cloud? 1.   Safe storage: Saving information on the internet is better than storing it on a USB drive or a computer hard drive — these can fail, resulting in lost data. 2.    Secure storage: Cloud storage provides firewalls that protect data from hackers or other threats. 3.    Ease of sharing: All members who log into the League website with their password have controlled access from anywhere at any time using

Engaging YOU

Answer survey and help us to help you to help us By Rich Bartholomew, Advocacy Every post-election period is a time for reflection. Many of us just finished an extended period of educating, registering and encouraging voters. Now it’s time to consider how to apply our individual and collective talents going forward. Do you want to do more of what you worked on recently? Do you want to explore other activities? The League of Women Voters of Palm Beach County recently sent a survey to all our members. It takes only minutes to complete, and is designed to give our organization a contemporary view of the topics you find most important, and help us consider how we might create opportunities to engage you in those areas. When our members interact, we learn more about the valuable life experiences and skills they possess. We’ve come to the League from diverse places

Michael Steele Events Win Palm Beach Chapter a Finalist Slot in LWVUS 2022 Awards: Increasing Power Through Partnerships! By Cynthia Archbold Thanks to LWVPBC’s Floridians for National Popular Vote, the state-wide coalition led by Kathleen Crampton, the Honorable Michael S. Steele came to Palm Beach County for three days in November 2021 to explain why he supports the National Popular Vote before sold-out crowds at the Forum Club in West Palm Beach and at Florida Atlantic University. But that was just the beginning. Almost every minute of the former GOP Chair’s visit he was the star of special events, morning, noon and night, networking with our partners in government, policy, media, education and philanthropy. Please read the League’s statement written by LWVPBC Development Chair Karen Clarke: Our project is a multi-issue pro-democracy three-day forum event series created to advance key LWVPBC education and advocacy initiatives as we approached the 2022
