FOREVER STAMP HONORS U.S. REP. JOHN LEWIS

FOREVER STAMP HONORS U.S. REP. JOHN LEWIS

By Kate Renchin, Co-chair, PBC Voting Rights Coalition It’s hard to think of anyone in the history of our country more associated with the preservation and extension of Voting Rights than U.S. Rep. John R. Lewis. He was a lifelong passionate and powerful advocate for civil rights as well as voting rights. He, like the League, knew the power of the vote to advance goals of equity and justice for all. Rep. Lewis’ entire life and legacy are an inspiration, dating to his younger days leading the 1963 March on Washington and the historic 1964 march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala., on what came to be known as Bloody Sunday. The violent response to the marchers by law enforcement led to the landmark Voting Rights Act (VRA) of 1965 which prohibited racial discrimination in voting. It affirmed the rights of racial and language minority voters and contained pre-clearance provisions for

Florida Judge Rules DeSantis’ Redistricting Map Unconstitutional- PBS

Florida judge rules DeSantis’ redistricting map is unconstitutional, orders it redrawn -Reposted from PBS.org   By Mike Schneider, Associated Press Politics Sep 2, 2023 8:26 PM EDT A Florida redistricting plan pushed by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis violates the state constitution and is prohibited from being used for any future U.S. congressional elections since it diminishes the ability of Black voters in north Florida to pick a representative of their choice, a state judge ruled Saturday. Circuit Judge J. Lee Marsh sent the plan back to the Florida Legislature with instructions that lawmakers should draw a new congressional map that complies with the Florida Constitution. The voting rights groups that challenged the plan in court “have shown that the enacted plan results in the diminishment of Black voters’ ability to elect their candidate of choice in violation of the Florida Constitution,” Marsh wrote. Be an Election Worker

Be an Election Worker

Link: Help Democracy by being an Election Worker in 2024 Cycle Election workers play an essential role in our democratic process. They assist with everything from setting up voting machines to ensuring voters have a smooth and positive experience at the polls. Dedicated election workers help ensure successful elections. We want Palm Beach County to continue to be recognized as having one of the best election experiences in the state, and that will take all of us working together to achieve that. Election workers are paid positions and provide an opportunity for individuals to earn a little extra money while fulfilling their civic duty. Pay ranges from $190 to $375, depending on the election worker’s position. We also offer community service hours. We provide comprehensive training for all election workers to ensure they are well-prepared for their roles, and we will make every effort to accommodate their preferences so they can serve

Florida’s Anti-Voter Law Blocked

Florida’s Anti-Voter Law Blocked

Federal judge blocks parts of restrictive voting law SB 7050, which targets nonpartisan civic engagement groups like LWV Ruling ‘releases all third-party voter registration organizations from some of the harsh limitations on registering voters,’ says LWVFL Co-President Scoon. Tallahassee, FL — On July 3, a federal judge temporarily blocked enforcement of portions of Florida’s anti-voter law, SB 7050. The order comes after three sets of plaintiffs, including individual Florida residents, the Florida State Conference of the NAACP, Hispanic Federation, Poder Latinx and the League of Women Voters of Florida, challenged the law in court and sought emergency relief. Campaign Legal Center represents LWVFL in its challenge to the law, which restricts and penalizes basic nonpartisan civic engagement efforts. Specifically, the preliminary injunction prevents Florida from penalizing nonpartisan civic organizations like LWVFL if any of its volunteers who help register voters are not U.S. citizens. The ruling also blocks a provision that prohibits

LWVFL Sues State Over Voting Rights

LWVFL Sues State for Hampering Voter Engagement Efforts TALLAHASSEE — The League of Women Voters of Florida, represented by the Campaign Legal Center, sued Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody and Secretary of State Cord Byrd on May 24 to block provisions of Florida’s recently enacted omnibus election law that would restrict and penalize basic nonpartisan civic engagement efforts. The law, Senate Bill 7050, directly targets and drastically restricts the ability of nonpartisan civic engagement organizations, like the League of Women Voters of Florida, to engage with voters, violating their right to freedom of speech and association. LISTEN HERE: NPR radio station WGCU in Southwest Florida interviews the lead Campaign Legal Center attorney representing the LWVFL in its lawsuit over SB 7050.
