A major point of every National Popular Vote presentation is that not every vote across the country counts and not every vote counts equally. The coverage of the 2024 election is already naming the handful of swing states that will be choosing the president. And there are really only a handful of swing counties within that handful of swing states that will choose our next president. There used to be more than 20 swing states. In the last two elections, there were 12. In 2024, there will be five, and some say just three.

The highest vote-getting presidential candidates in the last five elections received an average of five million votes nationwide. But in 2020, fewer than 21,500 votes determined the winner. And in 2016, it was fewer than 40,000 votes. That is the power of a small number of people in a small number of swing states. We’re working to change that so every vote will matter.

Please think of us when considering presentations for your community and business groups, and even for other LWVPBC committees. Anyone interested in a presentation for their group, inside or outside the League, please contact me, Danny Lishansky, at npv@lwvpbc.org
