Guest Speaker: Edward Tierney, Chief of Staff for the School District of Palm Beach County, the 10th largest school district in the nation and fourth largest in the State of Florida.
Background: How is the School District working to close the “digital divide” in Palm Beach County, and how is the District preparing for its next strategic plan, including using community input and lessons learned to inform where resources should be focused in the years ahead. Tierney has held a variety of positions from Behavior Intervention Associate to Principal of John I. Leonard High School, will discuss the current legislative session and court rulings, and how they may affect the School District.
Ed Tierney has worked for the School District of Palm Beach County for 18 years. He began his career at Indian Ridge School working exclusively with exceptional students. He spent six and a half years working at a center school for exceptional students and held a variety of positions from Behavior Intervention Associate to Principal. He has extensive experience working in Title 1 schools in high poverty areas.
Mr. Tierney spent four and a half years as the Principal of John I. Leonard High School. Under his leadership the graduation rate increased by 22%. Additionally, the school made significant progress closing achievement gaps in the areas of graduation rate, GPAs and access and enrollment in advanced coursework.
As an Instructional Superintendent, Mr. Tierney assisted the 15 schools in his portfolio with improving culture, systems, and instruction. Significant gains were made in these areas during his tenure as a principal supervisor.
Prior to becoming an educator, Mr. Tierney spent nine years in the United States Marine Corps. He was deployed several times during that time.
Mr. Tierney and his wife Lori have two adult children.
