Governor De Santis has recommended full affordable housing funding in the 2020/2021 budget. This is wonderful. Now we need to persuade the Florida Senate and House to do the same. The Florida legislature convenes on January 14, 2020. THERE IS STILL TIME TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

The Florida Legislature has swept more than $2 billion from the Sadowski State and Local Housing Trust Fund since FY2002, resulting in 94,000 foregone affordable housing units. The Sadowski Coalition estimates that full funding in FY 2019-20 would have resulted in over 28,000 jobs and $4.1 billion in positive economic impact. The State Housing Trust Fund and the Local Government Housing Trust Fund – funded through documentary stamp taxes – are a needed resource for Florida’s affordable housing.

What you can do?

  1. The Governor is asking for full funding of the trust fund for affordable housing during the 2020 legislative session. Contact the Governor’s Office and thank him for including the full housing appropriation.

  1. Contact your local legislators. Ask them to advocate on behalf of the Sadowski Trust Fund. You can find them at: www.flsenate.gov and www.myfloridahouse.gov

  1. Palm Beach County Representatives David Silvers (Dist. 87) and Polk County’s Sam H. Killebrew (Dist. 41) have filed HB 381 – to protect the State and Local Housing Trust Funds (Sadowski funds) from having unappropriated cash balances transferred to either the Budget Stabilization Funds or the General Revenue Fund. Companion SB 306 has been introduced in the Senate by Palm Beach County Senator Lori Berman and Indian River County Senator Debbie Mayfield.  Write Rep Silvers and Senators Berman and Mayfield – thanking them for introducing these bills.

  1. MOST IMPORTANT: Write to the committee chairs who are key to moving these bills forward:

Transportation and Tourism Subcommittee

Jay Trumbull – Chair

Brad Drake – Vice Chair

Barbara Watson – Democratic Ranking Member

Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Tourism and Economic Development
Travis Hutson (R) – Chair
